In the first photograph I chose three of my favourite LP's and captured them lent on some music equipment alongside the vinyl player. The intent of this shot was to express to the viewer that I am into music and the creation of music. The is enhanced by the fact that I have physical forms of albums and equipment that can be used to both create and play music. It is shot inside a bedroom as I wanted to connote how this all began and happened inside my bedroom and how that has slowly progressed. To take the photograph, I began by propping the props in specific locations and choosing a specific LP to use in the shot on the vinyl player. Eventually I choose the pink one as I believed it would look very saturated and colourful against the dark background. The choice to include a microphone was also purposefully included to better help lead into the story of the other five photographs. A big inspiration for this shot came when looking Sirli Raitma's work, specifically their photographs from the EHA series. I liked how she used specific objects or clothing that was very saturated and how she utilised it in her photographs to make them more eye catching and interesting. Overall, I wanted to present what inspired me to create music in this shot by capturing the very bright colours of the vinyl's.
The second photograph is a top down shot of the vibrant LP playing on the vinyl player. I took this photo from this perspective as I wanted to introduce more detail of the LP, and also include a visual representation of me listening to it. This photograph links directly into the next shot and is used as more of an establishing shot to show what artist I was listening to. I did this so that the photo would connect with the story better and serve as a introduction to the root of my inspirations. This would help the audience understand what the music I create will sound like. A big inspiration for this photograph was Chema Madoz and here photography of different objects. To capture this image I took many different photos of the LP and player from different angles. Some, from a lower perspective utilising depth of field while other practice shots focussed more on the detail of the actual vinyl player. Overall they all looked good and helped add to the story that I was presenting. However, I liked this shot the most as the focus on the bright disk was very eye-catching, utilising the golden ratio which enhanced the overall image.
In the third shot, I wanted to focus on when I fists listened to the vinyl. Detailing how I would view the LP's cover art and read the track list while also listening to the music. This was done to connote my love for the artist and the music they produce, hence how much this had inspired me and my own craft. Also, by including certain props, such as the midi keyboard, I was able to link this to the overall story and, which is how I began making my own style of music. I chose this specific clothing, which is very casual and American, and the specific LP's to show that I was inspired by American rap music and the fashion and lifestyle behind it. This was inspired by the work of Gunner Stahl, who photographs various artists in recording studios, focusing mainly on their clothing and choice of props. His work was very inspiring to me when I was choosing what my photos would consist of. Specifically, the fashion and US rap inspired imagery that is present in my photos that include me as a subject.
For the fourth shot I wanted to show how I began making music by recreating similar songs and melodies by using the midi keyboard on my desk. I chose specific props in this shot to connote how I was doing this on my own in my room. Detail such as the music equipment on the shelf and other household objects give a sense that I was doing this in a very informal, unprofessional environment. I chose to shoot in my bedroom, as I believed that this would enforce the belief that I have been working independently, teaching myself the skills to become an artists based on what I was listening to and aspiring to be. Furthermore, by including the microphone on top of the vinyl player, I am reinforcing that this story is about how I first began to believe that I could become like the artists I look up to. Which is built upon in the next images, where I begin using the microphone, and hoaning in on my craft.
The fifth shot focusses heavily on how I was building on my music and aspirations to become an artist. Specifically, when I first started using a microphone to record my own songs. This was done to help build on the story in which I gradually changed my aspirations of becoming a producing, into becoming a producer and artist. Similar to artists such as Kanye West or Tyler, The Creator. Using inspiration from videos of the artists using LP's to chop samples, and make beats. I wanted to showcase this in this shot, which is why I have included my keyboard, player, and laptop, as this was how I would have created beats. From taken inspirations from these songs, and making melodies that matched the vibe of these albums. The specific inclusion of the subject holding the microphone and looking at it was purposefully done, as to connote an idea of aspiration, and also link it to the overall story which has been building up to the final shot. Furthermore, I utilised rule of three's in the photo, through the subject, the microphone, and the vinyl player on my desk. I chose to have the microphone in the middle as this was what I had been setting myself up for. Doing this helped enhance this image and make it more engaging story wise. As it sets up the final photo and gives the audience a sense of direction in which the story is going.
Finally, in the sixth photograph, I wanted to provide a detailed shot of my home studio setup, and focus on how I now create music in the same bedroom that I was first inspired to do so. I heavily utilised rule of thirds in this shot creating a divide using the subject and the microphone. I was very inspired by many photographs taken by David Hwang, who focusses on shooting photographs with artists in their studio working on music. I purposefully left my room messy by including empty vapes, dirty dishes, and general rubbish around my setup to connote a sense of messiness and unprofessionalism. Which I wanted to use to show how I create all my art in my bedroom on my own, and work tirelessly on that, instead of doing regular thigs such as cleaning my room.
